Summer Volunteering Teaching in Lesotho

I had a very rewarding experience, for the month of July last year, teaching computers to teacher colleagues, in Lesotho, Africa, with an Irish charity called CAMARA.  Each year, during our summer holidays, teams of Camara volunteers travel to Africa to train teachers in the use of I.C.T skills, which they can then pass on to their students. I went with a team of 12 other people, composed of volunteers with varied skills, from teachers, to technicians and networking/website specialists. Lesotho, a small African country situated as an enclave in South Africa and known as ’the kingdom in the sky’, has really beautiful mountainous landscapes. We found the people we met there to be very friendly and welcoming and the teachers we taught to be really enthusiastic. We worked in three different schools and taught a range of ICT courses at different levels. I found the whole experience to be positive and enjoyable and the CAMARA project of “technology – empowering education” to be a very worthwhile one. Camara are now recruiting volunteers to travel to Africa during the summer of 2010. I would thoroughly recommend volunteering if you are interested in sharing your skills, learning lots and having a ‘unique’ experience!
