In July 2009 82 volunteers travelled to Africa with Camara to teach basic to advanced ICT skills in schools and educational institutions in: Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Lesotho and Zambia. Classes were taught in Networking, Linux, Moodle Administration, Multi-media, PC Maintenance and Open Office.
When we asked the Africa 09 volunteers to tell us what they enjoyed the most here is what they had to say:
The teaching – having a student demonstrate practically that they have learnt something. I found this immensely rewarding.
Seeing the country in a different aspect from tourist but also enjoying the sites at the weekend. I enjoyed meeting the individual students who were keen to learn.
The whole experience was amazing, I had highlights but teaching and watching the teachers log on and start working away on the computers unaided on our last day was my lasting memory.
Being able to fulfill the commitment Camara Zambia made, that teaching WOULD be provided, free, and to a high standard, to schools who signed up to the Camara project.
The teaching, the team work and the rewarding feeling in the end of the week of smiley faces/ knowledge gained.
I enjoyed the whole experience, and would count the friendships made, both within the team -camaraderie, and with the students and locals. I also took great satisfaction from seeing how worthwhile the project was, as we were fulfilling a real need that the people had, and helping them improve their opportunities in life.
Teaching and meeting the local people. It is great to see the learning and the eagerness to learn.
Teaching with no doubt. Having a small class of students eager of knowledge on computers. I also enjoyed traveling, people and landscapes. Experiencing the fact of being part of a team mainly made of Irish people (it is true)!
Meeting and working with the participants in the schools. The welcome given in all three venues, the eagerness with which the participants approached the sessions and their appreciation of our work was really gratifying. The hospitality we were shown everywhere was phenomenal.
Interested in teaching ICT with Camara in 2010? Here is some advice from A09 volunteers:
Volunteering with Camara is an opportunity not to be missed – you’ll gain every bit as much as you give.
It’s a great opportunity to do something ‘hands on’ that will benefit Africans for generations to come.
If you feel that you’d enjoy passing on your technical skills in an environment which demands your flexibility, you will have a richly rewarding, once in a lifetime experience.
Do it, with an open mind, and you will learn more than you will teach
Investigate for yourself, make up your own mind without other people’s opinions influencing you too much, It is a very worthwhile experience.
