Volunteer Roles & Camara Courses in Africa

By way of support and supplementing the training offered by the hubs, Camara send groups of volunteers from Ireland to offer training in basic to advanced IT skills and technical support.

Camara need volunteers with a whole range of skills, not all IT specific. We are looking for people with an interest in the following:

  • Team Coordinators: As part of each team there are 2 TC’s, one male and one female. Their role involves traveling 1 week early to meet local partners and schools, confirmation of the training timetable, accommodation, transport and acting as a general support for the team. For more information click on Team Coordinator Role [.pdf, 75KB]
  • Teaching: During 2009 Camara volunteers taught our skillbuilder course. For A10 we are looking for volunteers who are interested in teaching intermediate ICT (Information and Communication Technology), the pedagogy of ICT and Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment) administration.
  • Software Developer: Software applications and system software are vital for technology to be used as a tool in education. Camara are looking for volunteers who are knowledgeable on different applications and the creation of applications, in particular ones that can be used in a classroom environment.
  • Linux Administration: As Linux is an Open Source operating system, users are able to modify the programme to meet their own needs. Camara want at least one member of the team to be confident and able to share skills in the administration of the Open Source operating system.
  • PC Maintenance: As part of each team we need volunteers who are interested in pulling apart PCs, assessing and fixing hardware and software issues.
  • Networking: Currently very few Camara PCs are networked in Africa. We need volunteers who are confident setting up systems or who would like learn how and then share the skill.
  • Multimedia: Anyone with an interest or knowledge in design, websites, images, animation etc.
  • Other: There are lots of other invaluable skills and interests of a Camara volunteer, here are some examples: Marketing and Media, Blogging, Film/ Documentary, Monitoring & Evaluation, Moodle, Environmental, HIV/ AIDS, health worker, Flash, Photographer, Journalist… and many more!

Camara’s Courses in Africa

All Camara courses have been designed for those using Camara computers in an educational setting. Places in the 2010 advanced training course are offered first and foremost to registered ICT teachers at schools, colleges or universities which have received (or will receive) Camara computers. Other course participants are teachers, school administration staff and local volunteers who have helped in the hub to refurbish PCs in the last year.
