Development in Africa

Development as a concept is incredibly broad. In essence though, it can be described as any form of positive change. You’re then faced with the unavoidable and nearly impossible task of deciding what constitutes positive change…

One of the most celebrated Development specialists in the world, Amartya Sen, has described Development as being freedom. This simplifies things considerably. It means that an organisation working in Development can do anything that benefits people in their own eyes- whether it be improving their incomes, food security, participation in their communities, access to information, or the safety of their families.

Distilled further, Development is about trying to offer choices to people so they can make rational changes to improve their lives. This section has input from some of the most exciting and inspiring advocates of the field, as well as some analysis of where Africa’s headed and whether the rest of us have any role to play in it.
